Pre-Op Instructions
A little preparation before surgery makes a real difference in how the day unfolds, and how well your body heals afterward. This page is here to guide you in the time leading up to your procedure, so you can arrive feeling ready.
Scheduling and Appointments
Before your appointment date, you’ll receive confirmation of your surgery date and time. Plan to arrive 15 to 30 minutes early to allow time for final paperwork and any pre-surgery preparation. If you need to reschedule, have a question about timing, or anything else comes up, please reach out to our office as soon as possible.
In the Days Leading Up to Surgery
A few simple steps in advance can make your recovery much smoother:
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you, especially if sedation or anesthesia is part of your procedure
- Set up a quiet, comfortable space at home where you can rest after surgery
- Stock your kitchen with soft, easy-to-eat foods so meals require minimal effort
The Day Before Your Surgery
The hours before surgery are about settling in and giving your body a strong start. Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours, both can interfere with healing and anesthesia. Aim for a full night of restful sleep, and double-check that your transportation and companion plans are confirmed. Going to bed prepared makes the morning feel far less rushed.
The Day of Your Surgery
A few final reminders for the day of your appointment:

Common Questions About Preparing for Surgery
A few things patients often want to know in the days before their appointment.
Fasting helps reduce the risk of nausea and complications during sedation by keeping your stomach empty. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on when to stop eating and drinking before your appointment, typically several hours beforehand. Following those directions closely is one of the most important things you can do to keep your procedure safe.
In most cases, yes, but it depends on what you take and the type of procedure you’re having. Your surgeon will review your medication list at your consultation and let you know which ones to continue, pause, or take with a small sip of water on the morning of surgery. If you’re unsure about any prescription, supplement, or over-the-counter medication, please ask before your appointment.
If you’re running a fever, dealing with a bad cold, or feeling unwell in the days leading up to your procedure, please let us know right away. Depending on what’s going on, your surgeon may want to reschedule to keep your recovery as smooth as possible. Catching it early gives us time to plan accordingly and find a new date that works for you.
